Location and Access

The Atsena Otie Key tract is a barrier island .5 miles offshore from Cedar Key. Access to Atsena Otie Key is by boat.

The tract is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge.

 

Description

The natural communities on Atsena Otie Key are upland mixed forest, tidal swamp, tidal marsh, and coastal strand. The area provides a variety of natural communities that allow the user to view many wildlife species, most notably wading birds and shorebirds.

Egrets, herons, pelicans, cormorants, and white ibis are commonly seen and many nest on the island's interior.

 

Recreational Activities

The area provides fishing, hiking, and nature study. Visitors can view ruins from the historic Faber Pencil Factory. Other ruins are visible along the trail, which leads to a cemetery on the south end of the island. For more information, contact the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge at:
